Air Tightness Testing

Air tightness fan testingWith involvement from the earliest stages of any given scheme, atbec have a proven track record of delivering compliance with the requirements under Part F (Part L in Republic of Ireland) for Air Tightness or Air Permeability Testing. Working as an integral part of the design team we offer a range of consultancy services that ensure the air tightness strategy is considered through the design process and is incorporated in the build in a practical and cost effective fashion.
In March 2012, atbec ltd gained UKAS accreditiation for air tightness testing of commercial and domestic buildings.  This insures that all tests are carried out to the highest standards.
We would recommend that the design team agree the target air leakage rate early in the scheme.
Air Barrier Review
Often carried out before commencement on site, this meeting allows the design team to agree on a clear air tightness strategy. The location of the air barrier, the interfaces between differing materials and trades, the allocation of responsibility and the agreement materials to be used are all contained in a report issued to those in attendance.
On Site Inspections
An experienced tester will carry out a thorough room by room inspection of the air barrier at appropriate times during the build process and submit an illustrated report containing suggested remedial measures. In some instances this exercise is undertaken in order to ensure that the protocols agreed in the Air Barrier Review are being implemented.

Where onerous targets are set, it may be beneficial to test either the entire building or selected areas prior to the compliance test. This is the most effective guide as to the success of the designed air barrier.
Final Test
Carried out by fully trained engineers using calibrated equipment the tests can be carried out while other trades are working thus having no negative impact on build programmes. A multipoint test is completed in accordance with the approved testing methodology. Results are known shortly after the fans are turned off and reports issued within 24 hours.
Using hand held smoke guns localised leakage can be accurately detected and remedial plans agreed whilst still on site.
If required this can also be supported with an illustrated report.
